When I was growing up, the whole world was Jewish. The heroes were Jewish and the villains were Jewish. The landlord, the doctor, the grocer, your best friend, the village idiot, and the neighborhood bully: all Jewish. We were working class and immigrants as well, but that just came with territory. Essentially we were Jews on the streets of New York. We learned to be kind, cruel, smart and feeling in a mixture of language and gesture that was part street slang, part grade school English, part kitchen Yiddish.? One Sunday evening when I was eight years old my parents and I were riding in the back seat of my rich uncles car. We had been out for a ride and now we were back in the Bronx, headed for

home. Suddenly, another car sideswiped us. My mother and aunt shrieked. My uncle swore softly. My father, in whose lap I was sitting, said out the window at the speeding car, “Thats all right. Nothing but a few Jews in here.” In an instant I knew everything. I knew there was a world beyond our streets, and in that world my father was humiliated man, without power or standing.? When I was sixteen,a girl in the next building had her nose straightened; we all went together to see Selma Shapiro lying in state, wrapped in bandages from which would emerge a person fit for life beyond the block. Three buildings away a boy went downtown for a job, and on his application he wrote “Arnold Brown” instead of “Arnold Braunowiitz”. The news swept through the neighborhood like a wild fire. A nose job? A name change? What was happening here? It was awful; it was wonderful. It was frightening; it was delicious. Whatever it was, it wasnt standstill. Things felt lively and active. Self?confidence was on the rise, passivity on the wane. We were going to experience challenges. Thats what it meant to be in the new world. For the first time we could imagine ourselves out there.

But who exactly do I mean when I say we? I mean Arnie, not Selma. I mean my brother, not me. I mean the boys, not the girls. My mother stood behind me, pushing me forward. “The girl goes to college, too,” she said. And I did. But my going to college would not mean the same thing as my mothers going to college, and we all knew it. For my brother, college meant going from the Bronx to Manhattan. But for me From the time I was fourteen I yearned to get out of the Bronx, but get out into what? I did not actually imagine myself a working person alone in Manhattan and nobody else did either. What I did imagine was that I would marry, and that the man I married would get me downtown. He would brave the perils of class and race, and somehow Id be there alongside him.

  A. there was racial discrimination in employment

  B. Brown was just the same as Braunowiitz

  D. Brown sounds better

  27. From the passage we can infer that ______

  A. the Jews were satisfied with their life in the Bronx

  B. the Jewish immigrants could not be rich

  C. all the immigrants were very poor

  D. the young Jews didnt accept the stern reality

Many people who work in London prefer to live outside it, and to go in to their offices or schools every day by train, car or bus, even though this means they have to get up early in the morning and reach home late in the evening.

One advantage of living outside London is that houses are cheaper. Even a small flat in London without a garden costs quite a lot to rent. With the same money, one can get a little house in the country with a garden of one’s own.

Then, in the country one can really get away from the noise and hurry of busy working lives. Even though one has to get up earlier and spend more time in trains or buses, one can sleep better at night and during weekends and on summer evenings, one can enjoy the fresh, clean air of the country. If one likes garden, one can spend one’s free time digging, planting, watering and doing the hundred and one other jobs which are needed in a garden. Then, when the flowers and vegetables come up, one has got the reward together with those who have shared the secret of Nature.

Some people, however, take no interest in country things: for them, happiness lies in the town, with its cinemas and theatres, beautiful shops and busy streets, dance-halls and restaurants. Such people would feel that their life was not worth living if they had to live it outside London. An occasional walk in one of the parks and a fortnight’s (two weeks) visit to the sea every summer is all the country they want: the rest they are quite prepared to leave to those who are glad to get away from London every night.

  1. Which of the following statements is NOT true?

A.People who love Nature prefer to live outside the city.

B.All the people who work in London prefer to live in the country.

C.Some people enjoying city life prefer to work and live inside London.

D.Many nature lovers, though working in London, prefer to live outside.

  2. With the same money needed for ________, one can buy a little house with a garden in the country.

  A.getting a small flat with a garden

  B.having a small flat with a garden

  C.renting a small flat without a garden

  D.buying a small flat without a garden

  3. When the garden is in blossom, the one ________ has been rewarded.

  A.living in the country

B.having spent time working in the garden.

C.having a garden of his own.

D.having been digging, planting and watering

  4. People who think happiness lies in the city life would feel that ________ if they had to live outside London.

  A. their life was meaningless B. their life was invaluable

  C. they didn’t deserve a happy life D. they were not worthy of their happy life

  5. The underlined phrase “get away from” in the 3rd paragraph refers to ________.

  A. deal with B. do away with C. escape from D. prevent from

  4. A。 Such people would feel that their life was not worth living if they had to live it outside London可推知此題答案為A。

Shyness is the cause of much unhappiness for a great many people. Shy people are anxious and self-conscious; that is, they are excessively concerned with their won appearance and actions. Worrisome thoughts are constantly occurring in their minds: what kind of impression am I making?Do they like me? Do I sound stupid? Am I wearing unattractive clothes?

It is obvious that such uncomfortable feelings must negatively affect people. A person’s conception of himself or herself is reflected in the way he or she behaves, and the way a person behaves affects other people’s reactions. In general, the way people think about themselves has a profound effect on all areas of their lives.’

Shy people, having low self-esteem, are likely to be passive and easily influenced by others. They need reassurance that they are doing “the right thing.” Shy people are very sensitive to criticism; they feel it confirms their feelings of inferiority. They also find it difficult to be pleased by compliment with a statement like this one, “You’re just saying that to make me feel good. I know it’s not true.” It is clear that while self-awareness is a healthy quality, overdoing it is harmful.

Can shyness be completely eliminated, or at least reduced? Fortunately, people can overcome shyness with determined and patient efforts in building self-confidence. Since shyness goes hand in hand with a lack of self-esteem, it is important for people to accept their weaknesses as well as their strengths.

Each one of us is a unique, worthwhile individual, interested in our own personal ways. The better we understand ourselves, the easier it becomes to live up to our full potential. Let’s not allow shyness to block our chances for a rich and fulfilling life.

  1. What does the author try to prove by citing “what kind of impression am I making?”

  A. Shy people benefit from their caring about their appearance.

  A. a good quality B. the cause of unhappiness

  C. harmful to people D. a weak point of shy people

  3. When being praised, shy people feel that it is ________.

  A. good B. unreal C. very reasonable D. harmful

  4. Which of the following statements is true according to the passage?

  A. should find more of their weakness

  B. should understand themselves in the right way

  C. had better ignore their weakness

At the close of each business day, most trained teachers, administrators, politicians, and statesmen make objective analyses of all that has transpired. They then carefully evaluate performance in the achievement of certain specified objectives. You, as a student, would be wise to adopt the same practice and reflect upon your performance in relating to the achievement of certain personal and educational objectives.

First, what was your purpose, your motivational force in seeking an education? Did you seek an education in active performance, or did you seek to be educated in passive reception and automatic acquisition(獲取) of information that was fed to you? Was the profit motive your primary motivation for obtaining an education? Do you want a better education for the sole purpose of getting a better job? What does the educational process really mean to you?

We are part of a world in which men thrill to the touch of gold and hearts respond to the word money instead of being thrilled by the thought of good. We five in a world in which we are taught that the pursuit of happiness is an equation for the most rapid acquisition of money, by whatever means.

If profit and money are your first priorities, and compassion and commitment to people your least concern, you have done little other than accumulate some facts and compile some information for future reference. If making money is your daydream and losing money your nightmare, if poverty is your worst fear and making money your most fervent prayer, you have missed the opportunity for education. You have failed yourself and have only received Nome instruction.

Americans spend their free time in various ways.

America is a country of sports—of hunting, fishing and swimming, and of team sports like baseball and football. Millions of Americans watch their favorite sports on television. They also like to play in community orchestras(管弦樂隊),make their own films or recordings, go camping ,visit museums, attend lectures, travel, garden, read, and join in hundreds of other activities. The people also enjoy building things for their homes, sewing their own clothes, even making their own photographs. They do these things for fun as well as for economy.

But as much as Americans enjoy their free time, the country is at the same time a"self-improvement" country. More than 25 million *s continue their education, chiefly by going to school in the evening, during their own free time, at their own expense. Added to the time spent on personal activities, Americans a1so devote a great amount of their time to the varied needs of their communities. Many hospitals, schools, libraries, museums, parks, community centers, and organizations that assist the poor depend on the many hours citizens devote to these activities, often without any pay. Why do they do it?

There are several answers. The idea of cooperating and sharing responsibility with one another for the benefit of all is as old as the country itself.

When the country was first founded in 1776,it was necessary for the settlers to work together to live. They had crossed dangerous seas and risked all they had in their struggle for political and religious freedom. There remains among many Americans a distrust of central government. People still prefer to do things themselves within their communities, rather than give the government more control.

Sometimes people offer their time because they wish to accomplish something for which no money is paid, to do something that will be of benefit to the entire community. It is true that some people use their leisure because they are truly interested in the work; or they are learning from the experience.

No matter what the reason is, hundreds of thousands of so called leisure hours are put into hard, unpaid work on one or another community need.

  1. This passage is mainly about ________ . 【 B 】

  A. why America is a country of sports

  B. how Americans spend their free time

  C. why America is a "self-improvement" country

  2. The writer mentions the foundation of the country in order to indicate ________.【 C 】

  A. the early history of America

  B. the American peoples determination to live

  C. the reason for Americans willingness to cooperate and share responsibility

3.Which of the following best explains the meaning of the underlined word “l(fā)eisure"【 C 】

  A. work time B. energy C. spare time

  4.What can we infer from the text【 A 】

  A. The first settlers left their hometown for political and religious reasons.

  B. Many Americans don′t trust the central government.

  C. American people enjoy building things for their homes just for fun.

Interact use appears to cause a drop in psychological health, according to research at Carnegie Mellon University.

Even people who spent just a few hours a week on the Internet experienced more bad feelings and loneliness than those who was online less frequently, the two-year study showed. Researchers are puzzling over the results, which were completely contrary to their expectations. They expected that the Net would prove socially healthier than television, since the Net allows users to choose their information and to communicate with others.

The fact that Internet use reduces time available for family and friends may account for the drop in psychological health, researchers hypothesized (推測). Faceless, bodiless“virtual”(虛的) communication may be less psychologically satisfying than actual conversation, and the relationships formed through it may be shallower. Another possibility is that exposure to the wider world through the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.

“But it s important to remember this is not about the technology, it s about how it is used,”says psychologist Christine Riley of Intel, one of the study s sponsors (發(fā)起人). "It really points to the need for considering social factors in terms of how you design applications and services for technology. "

  36. Whats the finding of the research undertaken at Carnegie Mellon University?

  A) People spend more time on the Internet now.

  B) People spend less time with their families and friends now.

  C) The Net proves socially healthier than television.

  D) Internet use may cause a drop in psychological health.

  37. What had the researchers expected before the research?

  A) The Net may account for the drop in psychological health.

  B) Internet use may improve social health.

  C) Internet use has nothing to do with social health.

Internet use appears to cause a drop in psychological health, according to research at Carnegie Mellon University我們可以得出研究的結(jié)果是網(wǎng)絡(luò)造成人的心理健康下降。

They expected that the Net would prove socially healthier than television可得出B為正確答 案。

在文章中Christine Riley所說的話“It really points to the need for considering social factors in terms of how you design applications and services for technology.”

  The Young Generation

Old people are always saying that the young are not whatthey were. The same comment is made from generation togeneration and it is always true. It has never been truer than it istoday. The young are better educated. They have a lot moremoney to spend and enjoy more freedom. They grow up morequickly and are not so dependent on their parents. They thinkmore for themselves and do not blindly accept the ideals of theirelders. Events which the older generation remembers vividly arenothing more than past history. This is as it should be. Every new generation is different from theone that preceded it. Today the difference is very marked indeed.

The old always assume that they know best for the simple reason that they have been around abit longer. They don’t like to feel that their values are being questioned or threatened. And this isprecisely what the young are doing. They are question the assumptions of their elders anddisturbing their complacency. Office hours, for instance, are nothing more than enforced slavery.Wouldn’t people work best if they were given complete freedom and responsibility? And whatabout clothing? Who said that all the men in the world should wear drab grey suits and convicthaircuts? If we ruin our minds to more serious matters, who said that human differences can bestbe solved through conventional politics or by violent means, who said that human difference canbest be solved through conventional politics or by violent means? Why have the older generationso often used violence to solve their problems? Why are they so unhappy and guilt-ridden in theirpersonal lives, so obsessed with mean ambitions and the desire to amass more and more materialpossessions? Can anything be right with the rat-race? Haven’t the old lost touch with all that isimportant in life?

These are not questions the older generation can shrug off lightly. Their record over the pastforty years or so hasn’t been exactly spotless. Traditionally, the young have turned to their eldersfor guidance. Today, the situation might be reversed. The old—if they are prepared to admitit—could learn a thing or two from their children. One of the biggest lessons they could learn is thatenjoyment is not ‘sinful’. Enjoyment is a principle one could apply to all aspects of life. It is surelynot wrong to enjoy your work and enjoy your leisure; to shed restricting inhibitions. It is surely notwrong to live in the present rather than in the past or future. This emphasis on the present is onlyto be expected because the young have grown up under the shadow of the bomb: the constantthreat of complete annihilation. This is their glorious heritage. Can we be surprised that they shouldso often question the sanity of the generation that bequeathed it?

  1. Which of the following features in the young is NOT mentioned?

[A] Better educated. [B] More money and freedom.

  [C] Independence. [D] Hard work.

  2. What so the young reject most?

[A] Values. [B] The assumption of the elders.

  [C] Conformity. [C] Conventional ideas.

  3. Why do the young stress on the present?

[A] They have grown up under the shadow of the bomb.

  [B] They dislike the past.

[C] They think the present world is the best.

[D] They are afraid of destruction.

  4. What can the old learn from the young generation?

[A] Enjoyment is not sinful. [B] People should have more leisure time.

[C] Men might enjoy life. [D] One should enjoy one’s work.

  A. 價值。

  1. reminder

  3. take leave

I took leave to consider this matter settled.

  4. conformity

  6. ridden (ride

  8. amass

  9. a rat-race

  10. shrug off 對……

  11. spotless

  12. shed

  13. annihilate

  14. bequeath

  15. sanity

  1. convict haircut.

What is your favourite colour? Do you like yellow , orange ,red? If you do ,you must be an optimist, a leader, an active person who enjoys life, people and excitement. Do you prefer greys and blues? Then you are probably quiet, shy, and you would rather follow than lead. You tend to be a pessimist. At least, this is what psychologists tell us, and they should know, because they have been seriously studying the meaning of colours preference, as well as the effect that colours have on human beings. They tells us, among other facts, that we do not choose our favourite clour as we grow up----we are born with our preference. If you happen to love brown, you did so, as soon as you opened your eyes, or at least as soon as you could see clearly. Colours do influence our moods----there is no doubt about it .A yellow room makes most people feel more cheerful and more relaxed than a dark green one; and a red dress brings warmth and cheer to the saddest winter day. On the other hand ,black is depressing. A black bridge over the Thames River, near London, used to be the scene of more suicides than any other bridge in the area ----until it was repainter green. The number of suicide attempts immediately fell sharply ;perhaps it would have fallen even more if the bridge had been done in pink or baby blue. Light and bright colours make people not only hppier but more active. It is an established fact that factory workers work better, harder ,and have fewer accidents when their machines are painted orange rather than black or grey. -
