Kirkwallwasatownofineffabledelight.BycomparisonwiththeisolationoftheIslanditwasallbustleandexcitement.
Thenarrowpavedstreetsonwhichpedestrians,horsedrawnvehiclesandcarsallmadetheirwaytogetherwerelinedwithbrightlylitshopwindows.IntheharborgreatshipslayatanchorbearingthenamesoffarawayplaceslikeAberdeenandevenLeith;and,mostexcitingofall,upatthefarendofthemainstreet,shelteredbythebuildings,theregrewatree!AtreewassomethingsoexoticinourexperiencethatwheneverwevisitedKirkwallwecouldhardlywaittorushupthestreettoseeifitwasstillthere.Itouldnothavesurprisedusifapantherhadlurkedamongitsbrancheswaitingtopouncedownonanunwarypasser-byorifbrightlyplumagedparrotshadhoppedfromtwigtotwig.

Itwas,asIhavesaid,afineautumnalday,theskywasclearandserene,andnaturethatrichandoldenliverywhichwealwaysassociatewiththeideaofabund(wore)ance.Theforestshadputontheirsoberbrownandyellow,whilesometreesofthetenderedkinkhadbeennippedbythefrostsintobrilliantdyesoforange,purpleandscarlet.Streamingfilesofwildducksbegantomaketheirappearancehighintheair;thebarkofthesquirrelmightbeheardfromthegrovesofbeachandhickorynuts,andthepensivewhistleofthequailatintervalsfromtheneighboringstubble-field.
Thesmallbirdsweretakingtheirfarewellbanquets.Inthefullnessoftheirrevelry,theyfluttered,chirpingandfrolicking,frombushtobush,andtreetotree,capriciousfromtheveryprofusionandvarietyaroundthem.Therewasthehonestcock-robinthefavoritegameofstriplingsportsmen,withitsloudquerulousnote;andthetwitteringblackbirdsflyingthesableclouds;andthegolden-wingedwoodpecker,withhiscrimsoncrest,hisbroadblackgorget,andsplendidplumage;andthecedarbird,withitsred-tippedwingsandyellow-tippedtail,anditslittlemonteirocapoffeathers;andtheblue-jay,thatnoisycoxcomb,inhisgaylightbluecoatandwhiteunder-clothes;screamingandchattering,noddingandbobbingandbowing,andpretendingtobeongoodtermswitheverysongsterofthegrove.
